Raised Beds and Soil Arrive! - 05/28/13

The following post is a project update from Nick Gauna, Campaign Organizer for the all US markets, and the American Tortoise Rescue Grassroots campaign that raised $6,230 to construct a garden to feed the rescued turtles at the facility.

Here comes another impact update from the American Tortoise Rescue. Susan passed on these pictures of soil, plants, and the raised garden beds, which will grow fruits and vegetables to feed rescued turtles and tortoises, with this brief description:

Wood chips delivered for making mulch for the sustainable garden beds. Garden beds assembled and waiting for dirt, mulch, and plants. Tomatoes already growing at the end.

Further Steps Taken for the Tortoise Garden Beds - 01/01/13

The following post is a project update from Nick Gauna, Campaign Organizer for all organizations West of the Mississippi River, and the American Tortoise Rescue Grassroots campaign that raised $6,230 to feed rescued turtles and tortoises at the facility.

Los Angeles - Susan passed along another update for the raised garden bed project from American Tortoise Rescue:

“Blocks were delivered for the garden wall and the box turtles got very excited. The sulcata wall to keep the big tortoises away from the food is almost done. Once the wall is done we will remove all that chain link behind it—one section already down. Next step are planters and then meeting with a local farmer for advice on what crops to start now. We have had no rain in about 6 months so timing has been good. Progress!”

Great to hear things are all on track for the garden. Susan also let me know that they received a bump of over 1,000 new Facebook followers after the campaign ended. They now have more than 3,000 total.

Thanks for all the updates Susan!

Matching Funds Received for American Tortoise Rescue - 09/01/12

The following post is a project update from Nick Gauna, Campaign Organizer for the West Coast and Pacific Northwest , and the American Tortoise Rescue Grassroots campaign that raised $6,230 to construct a garden to feed the rescued turtles at the facility.

Receiving the Check from Malibu Country Mart

Los Angeles – Great news from LA as the American Tortoise Rescue received its matching-donation check from our Grassroots campaign. Susan, founder and executive director of American Tortoise Rescue (ATR), passed on this note and a picture of the check being awarded to ATR:

Nonprofit American Tortoise Rescue (ATR) received a $2,000 matching grant from Malibu Country Mart in observance of World Turtle Day 2012.

Receiving the check from Julie Labin (center in the photo), director of sustainability at Malibu Country Mart, are Marshall Thompson and Susan Tellem, cofounders of ATR. World Turtle Day 2012 celebrated turtles and tortoises of all species throughout the world and fought to save declining native populations.

Malibu Country Mart General Partner Michael Koss authorized the matching funds when the sanctuary joined with Groupon.com in a successful Grassroots fundraising campaign. The funds will be used to install a sustainable vegetable garden to feed the more than 100 turtles and tortoises housed at the rescue. Said Ms. Labin, ‘It was logical partnership due to Malibu Country Mart and American Tortoise Rescue’s shared dedication to green technology and sustainable life in Malibu.’”

We will check back in with Susan and the turtles once the garden gets underway.

Fences for American Tortoise Rescue Garden Are Installed - 06/20/12

The following post is a project update from Nick Gauna, Campaign Organizer for the West Coast and Pacific Northwest , and the American Tortoise Rescue Grassroots campaign that raised $6,230 to construct a garden to feed the rescued turtles at the facility.

Los Angeles – What a fantastic campaign! We kicked off World Turtle Day 2012 with a bang as we hit our goal on the first day of the campaign and did not look back.

Susan, founder and executive director of American Tortoise Rescue, and I had such a blast planning and delivering this campaign and were both ecstatic with the results. Not only did we raise enough funds to construct six huge garden beds, but we can refurbish two large ponds for the turtles as well. Within one month of closing the campaign, Susan reports that the garden construction has begun:

“Here is the new fencing that will keep the turtles out of the wall building area. We are waiting for the bids to come in to build the wall around the sustainable garden (where there will be six huge planting beds) to keep the tortoises from rampaging through and eating everything before it grows. Here are two of the recipients of the new food—Tank is on the left and Popcorn is on the right.”

Soon To Be A Garden

The garden should be up and running in no time—so much for moving at a turtle’s pace. We’ll update you as the garden grows, so be sure to check back in.
