Pride1A large group congregated on the fourth floor lobby of Groupon to mark the first ever social event of Pride at Groupon.  The gathering united a diverse group of people under a common goal: to work together and promote the LGBT community of Groupon while providing a welcoming resource for all Groupon employees.

James Bain, Co-Chair for Pride at Groupon, addressed the group; first defining Pride at Groupon then providing a glimpse of what to expect in the coming year. Pride at Groupon is a new group that is starting to take shape within the Groupon family. Pride at Groupon is “a consortium of Groupon employees that identify as LGBT and straight, committed to a diverse and accepting work environment by creating a progressive, welcoming and supportive network for the LGBT professionals at Groupon.”

Ryan-PrideAfter welcoming members to the newly-formed Pride at Groupon, James then revealed that Groupon was one of several large Chicago-based companies to sign an open letter supporting marriage equality in Illinois. The letter made its way to lawmakers in Springfield as the state moves to adopt formal equality legislation. Along with Groupon, the Chicago Cubs and Garrett Popcorn shops signed a letter stating that “[...] [to] be competitive, a state must create an equitable, fair and respectful environment for all of its citizens.”  To further this mission, Pride at Groupon will be making opportunities available for employees to get involved with the fight for equality in Illinois through the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and Equality Illinois.  In the coming months Pride at Groupon aims to start natural, meaningful conversations about the LGBT community. This will provide an opportunity for our workplace to come together to learn more about not only their coworkers, but also the LGBT community. Along with other Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) at Groupon, Pride at Groupon will be collaborating to promote professional development and networking opportunities. We have a spot reserved in the Pride Parade and we’re excited to be a part of the celebration.

Aa Groupon employee, I’m honored to be a part of this group and excited about the future of Pride at Groupon.  As a working professional, I’m thrilled that my workplace embraces the diversity of all its employees and provides a welcoming environment with numerous opportunities for professional and personal growth.  When I came out almost 2 years ago, I wanted to find a community that accepts me for who I am, yet challenges me to be a better person every day.  Working at Groupon, I undoubtedly feel comfortable and supported by my colleagues and the Groupon Culture.

Being a part of Pride at Groupon, I feel motivated to promote the tenets of equality and diversity both within Groupon and outside the company.  I feel very fortunate that I not only found a company that supports me, but also a group of dedicated people working hard to promote causes that I identify with and care deeply about.  I encourage all members of the Groupon family to join the dialogue and help foster the goal of equality.

Be proud.
